Marketing is just storytelling

As a brand storyteller and interpreter of clues in business, one of the favorite things that shows up in my inbox every day is Anita Campell’s inside scoop, Small Business Trends. Anita is always up to date, on the mark and ahead of the curve and it’s a delight just to see where her brain is heading that day!

Earlier this week, she reported that Network Solutions had hosted the ‘Rock Star Entrepreneurs and Your Business Webinar’ and introduced the State of the Small Business Report, which said that small businesses are not as successful as they would like to be when it comes to  effectively marketing themselves to grow their business beyond their current size.

Interestingly, Anita wrote that the same study also found that only 12 percent of small businesses are engaging in social media. Restated: Only 12 percent of small businesses are taking advantage of a targeted, absolutely free way to market their business online.

Anita’s conclusion? Social media is just another (free) tool to use to get out there and market yourself and, of course, the best way to do that is tell your story! So use the social media networks to tell your story. Use your own ‘brand voice’ –  be consistent in embedding your personality so that your potential clients can really hear you. It’s the best way to connect with your target market.

After all, every small business has a unique story. If you want to successfully market and grow your business, focus on telling yours. In the meantime, go check out Anita’s site and sign up!
